Overview
- Eight people were shot late Monday at a private homeless encampment near E. Lake Street and 28th Ave. S., with four in critical condition and evidence of an exchange of gunfire and roughly 30 shell casings recovered.
- A separate shooting about 11 a.m. near the I-35W & Lake Street transit station injured five men, including one with life-threatening wounds, with investigators finding two sets of casings and reports of dozens of rounds fired.
- No arrests have been announced in either case as detectives review video and ballistic evidence, and officials say a connection between the incidents remains under consideration but unconfirmed.
- Mayor Jacob Frey and Chief Brian O’Hara cited chronic disorder at both locations and announced immediate steps to fence or close the Midtown Greenway walkway and to clear the encampment once crime-scene processing is complete.
- The encampment sits on land owned by Hamoudi Sabri, who has resisted city removal efforts and faces fines and a lawsuit, while the city requests added support from state troopers, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the BCA.
