Overview
- The Rede Sismográfica Brasileira recorded two tremors off Maricá on Saturday, July 4, measuring magnitude 3.0 and 2.0 with the larger event about 60 km from the town.
- The Centro de Sismologia at the University of São Paulo classified the M3.0 as a shallow quake likely within 0–10 km depth.
- RSBR said there were no reports of residents feeling the July 4 tremors and no damage has been reported.
- Seismologists including Gilberto Leite said low-magnitude offshore quakes are relatively common along Brazil’s southeast margin and rarely cause harm.
- RSBR, which unites USP, UnB, UFRN and the Observatório Nacional, continues routine monitoring but cautioned there is no reliable method to predict how the activity will evolve so the public should follow official updates.
