Overview

  • A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights on August 2, the first of this month’s tremors.
  • A magnitude 2.7 tremor shook Hillsdale on August 5 and was felt by about 3,500 people.
  • Both events occurred within the Ramapo Fault network and caused no reported damage, according to the USGS.
  • New Jersey has recorded 24 earthquakes so far in 2025, including four above magnitude 4.5.
  • Experts note that despite this surge in minor seismic activity the likelihood of a major destructive quake remains very low.
