Overview

• Two sisters, engineer Anu Suriya and her sister Anuradha, were detained on July 13 in Bilaspur for allegedly rigging the PWD Sub-Engineer recruitment exam with concealed electronic gadgets.
• Authorities recovered seven devices, including a hidden body-camera, Bluetooth earpiece, walkie-talkie set, tablet and mobile phones, from inside the exam hall and an adjacent rickshaw.
• A tip-off from a suspicious auto-rickshaw driver prompted National Students’ Union of India activists to record the operation and alert police to the cheating scheme.
• Charges against the siblings cite Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 318(2) for cheating, 112(2) for organised crime and 61(2) for criminal conspiracy, along with the Information Technology Act and the Chhattisgarh Examination Act.
• Officials say the Rs 60,000 worth of equipment was bought online, and a comprehensive probe is under way with senior authorities promising strict action against all involved.
