Overview

  • Joel Ezekiel, a 49-year-old Singaporean, was arrested after a video of him slicing a bottle with a samurai sword in an open public area went viral. The police laid one charge for possession of a knuckle duster without lawful purpose.
  • A raid at Ezekiel's home discovered more illegal weapons, including a butterfly knife, a flick knife, and a knuckle duster. The Central Narcotics Bureau is investigating him for drug-related offences after drug paraphernalia was found in his residence.
  • If he's convicted under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act for possessing a scheduled weapon, Ezekiel could be jailed for up to five years and receive at least six strokes of the cane as a first offender.
  • In a separate incident, a 38-year-old man allegedly attacked two traffic police officers with a stun device, a prohibited item in Singapore, after they signalled him to pull over for speeding. He was subsequently arrested.
  • The police seized a samurai sword, two knuckle dusters, a chopper, a dagger, and controlled drugs from the attacker. The Central Police Division presented a Public Spiritedness Award to a 22-year-old National Serviceman who assisted in the arrest.
