Two Simi Valley Teens Plead Guilty in Regal Plaza Hate-Crime Assault Case

They remain in juvenile custody pending mid-November sentencing.

Overview

  • The 16-year-olds changed their pleas to guilty on Oct. 29 to felony assault with a hate-crime special allegation, prosecutors said.
  • Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13 and Nov. 19, and both are expected to stay at the Ventura County Juvenile Facilities in Oxnard until then.
  • Prosecutors said one of the two also admitted involvement in a separate criminal threats case tied to a May incident at the same shopping center.
  • Three other juveniles still face charges, including a 17-year-old who pleaded not guilty and remains detained, while two others have November arraignments.
  • The case stems from an Aug. 1 attack outside Regal Cinemas that left three victims, including 18-year-old Michael Robinson, with minor injuries as witnesses reported racial slurs.
