Two Senior Maoist Leaders Surrender to Telangana’s Rachakonda Police

Police credit state rehabilitation outreach for the move.

Overview

  • Kakarala Sunitha, 62, a DK SZC state committee member, and Chennuri Harish, 35, an area committee member of the Telangana State Committee, surrendered before Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu on August 21.
  • Police said the pair chose to return to family life after welfare measures promoted by the Telangana government, and both are eligible for benefits under the surrender rehabilitation scheme.
  • Sunitha spent nearly four decades in the movement, later serving in political and ideological training roles in the Andhra–Odisha Border and Dandakaranya regions, and her husband T. L. N. Chalam was killed in a June encounter at Annapuram National Park.
  • Harish joined the armed movement in 2020, became a Mangi–Indravelli Area Committee member in 2024, and took part in encounters in December 2022 and June 2025, including Irpagutta where leader Bhaskar and three cadres were killed.
  • Rachakonda police described the surrender as a morale boost for counter-insurgency efforts and appealed to remaining cadres in Telangana to lay down arms and rejoin civilian life.
