Overview

  • On June 12 a kayaker on the Schlei river in Schleswig-Flensburg was swept from his craft by a high wave into 16 °C water and plucked to safety by the DGzRS rescue boat Herwil Götsch.
  • The kayaker was transported to hospital in critical condition but has since stabilized and is no longer facing life-threatening injuries.
  • On June 13 a 61-year-old non-swimmer fell from a rafting tour on the Danube in Passau and was rescued unharmed by Wasserwacht Bayern after passersby raised the alarm.
  • Both incidents occurred during a weekend of high temperatures and underscore how rapidly cold-water immersion can incapacitate even experienced paddlers.
  • Wasserwacht Bayern has cautioned against sudden entry into cool waters when overheated and urged recreational users to prioritize safety measures.
