Two Rescued After Piper PA-32 Crash in Long Island Sound

FAA investigators are on scene to examine the crash site; commercial teams have begun salvaging the submerged plane.

Overview

  • The Piper PA-32, carrying a pilot and passenger, declared an emergency less than ten minutes after departing Bridgeport’s Sikorsky Memorial Airport and crashed about eight miles south of Tweed New Haven Airport
  • U.S. Coast Guard crews and a passing vessel rescued both occupants from roughly 58°F water after they ditched wearing life jackets and brought them to Stony Creek Pier for EMS support.
  • Both survivors suffered minor injuries and hypothermia symptoms before being transferred in stable condition to Yale New Haven Hospital.
  • The FAA has launched an investigation into the crash while the NTSB continues gathering information to decide on a formal inquiry.
  • Commercial salvage teams are now recovering the fully submerged aircraft, which is registered to an owner in Newtown, Connecticut.
