Two Rescued After 30-Meter Fall Into St. Anton Gorge Following Après-Ski Drinking

Steep terrain with overhead power lines forced a night winch airlift.

Overview

  • Police said a 21-year-old from Berlin fell roughly 30 meters from the edge of a parking area into a gorge near the MooserWirt in St. Anton.
  • A 22-year-old Austrian who tried to assist slipped into the same ravine, leaving both men unable to climb out.
  • Bergrettung St. Anton requested the ARA Flugrettung helicopter from Reutte, and both men were hoisted out by winch during a nighttime operation.
  • Pilot Oliver Waldschmidt reported that the slope and nearby power lines complicated the rescue before the pair were set down at a nearby landing site.
  • Rescuers found the men intoxicated and undercooled; they were not seriously injured and declined further medical treatment after signing waivers.
