Overview

• Around 8 a.m., officers responding to a reported mental-health emergency near 7th Street and Southern used less-lethal tools that failed before shooting a man who was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
• Police said the man in the morning incident was armed with a knife, a weapon was recovered at the scene, and no officers were injured.
• Just before 7:30 p.m., a separate shooting near 16th Street and Buckeye Road left one person with serious injuries, and police reported no injuries to officers or other community members.
• The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division will lead the investigation into the evening shooting as inquiries remain active in both cases.
