Two Passenger Incidents Halt German Trains After 280 km/h ICE Brake Pull and EC Evacuation

Police say both passengers were detained with no injuries reported.

Overview

  • A 22-year-old fare evader on ICE 501 from Berlin to Munich smashed the emergency-glass and pulled the brake at about 280 km/h near the Euerwang Tunnel, forcing a full stop and an unscheduled halt in Ingolstadt.
  • A 50-year-old Bundeswehr soldier restrained the suspect onboard before handing him to police, and federal authorities opened investigations for dangerous interference with rail traffic, misuse of emergency systems, damage and fare evasion.
  • All roughly 320 passengers on the ICE remained unharmed despite the emergency braking.
  • In a separate case that evening, an EC from Munich to Zürich was evacuated in Memmingen after a 42-year-old man in apparent psychological crisis locked himself in a toilet and claimed to be armed; special units secured him and services resumed after about 30 minutes.
  • Police later found a pocketknife, items indicating possible drug use and no valid ticket on the Memmingen suspect, who remains in custody pending further inquiry.
