Overview
- Musa Cetin, 29, was found unconscious in a Midtown South Precinct cell at 8:33 p.m. Friday after a check at 8:19 p.m., was taken to Bellevue in critical condition, and died Sunday, police said.
- Law enforcement sources said Cetin appeared to have hanged himself with a jacket, while the medical examiner works to determine the official cause of death and the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division investigates.
- Roughly two hours after Cetin was discovered, Christopher Nieves, 46, was found dead in a Brooklyn Criminal Court holding cell at about 10:15 p.m., with the medical examiner probing the cause and the Force Investigation Division reviewing the case.
- Police said Nieves had been arrested the day before for stealing food from a Whole Foods, and sources described his death as a possible medical episode or heart attack.
- The Department of Correction reported a separate death Saturday of Rikers detainee Jimmy Avila, 44, and the Legal Aid Society criticized notification practices and said these cases contribute to a rising tally of deaths in or soon after custody this year.
