Two North Carolina Sheriff's Deputies And Suspect Critically Wounded in Shootout During Warrant Execution
Suspect Identified as Shawn Tobin Locklear Jr., Accused Murderer on Pretrial Release, Fled Scene in Stolen Patrol Car and Injured Deputy Before Capture
- Shooting occurs during a warrant execution when deputies encountered suspect Shawn Tobin Locklear Jr., an accused murderer who violated the terms of his pretrial release by removing his monitoring bracelet.
- Deputies Jonathan Walters and Kaelin Locklear were critically injured during the encounter and are being treated at a Fayetteville hospital. The suspect was also critically injured and is being treated at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
- The incident escalated when the suspect got into one of the deputy’s cruisers, ran over Deputy Walters, breaking his leg, and fled the scene. He was later apprehended after changing vehicles.
- The local sheriff, Burnis Wilkins, expressed his dissatisfaction with aspects of the judicial system that allowed for Locklear's release prior to the trial, following the violent confrontation that nearly resulted in a deputy's death.
- In response to the incident, Robeson County Sheriff has requested assistance from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the State Bureau of Investigation.
