Two NEHU Students Critical After Drunk-Driving Crash Near Gate-II

Police confirmed intoxication; the driver is in seven-day judicial custody.

  • Police say a Maruti 800 (ML05 J 4916) driven by security guard Parmen M. Sangma lost control near NEHU Gate-II on November 17 and struck two students after first hitting a parked scooter.
  • Stephanie Shadap, 22, and Daritngen Ponduhkhei, 20, were initially taken to Shillong Civil Hospital and then shifted to Nazareth Hospital’s ICU, where both remain in critical condition.
  • A medical examination found the driver had consumed alcohol, the vehicle was seized at Mawkynroh Outpost, and a case including drunk driving and attempted murder has been registered.
  • CCTV footage captured the vehicle speeding toward the students, while NEHU filed an FIR, ordered an internal report, and urged deletion of circulating videos to protect the victims’ privacy.
