Two Mobility-Device Fires Hours Apart in Singapore Leave 8 Hospitalised

Investigators are reviewing battery and charging risks following a 200-person evacuation in Ang Mo Kio.

Overview

  • At about 11.15pm on Nov 4, a fire involving a personal mobility aid erupted at the eighth-floor lift lobby of Block 641 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 and was extinguished by firefighters using a water jet.
  • About 200 residents were evacuated as a precaution and four people were taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation, with the cause under investigation.
  • Less than four hours later, SCDF put out a Yishun flat fire that preliminary findings indicate likely originated from a personal mobility device in the living room, leading to about 40 evacuations and four more taken to hospital.
  • SCDF cites 187 fires involving active mobility devices over the past five years and reports eight fire-related deaths as of August 2025, with most incidents involving PMDs or power-assisted bicycles.
  • Authorities warn against modified devices and non-original chargers and say tougher action against sellers and users of non-compliant devices is under consideration, directing the public to LTA and SCDF safety guidance.
