Two Minors Confess to Six Minicar Attacks in Rome

Forensic traces and witness testimony prompted investigators to hand the case to the juvenile prosecutor who will decide whether to seek custody or other measures.

Overview

  • Investigators say a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old admitted during questioning to attacks carried out from a small minicar in Rome that police link to six incidents on Oct. 4–5.
  • Police seized the dark minicar in Via Alessandro Volta and built a chain of evidence that includes a lost baseball cap, a mechanic's account of custom LEDs and stickers, phone data and cyber and forensic examinations.
  • Actor Davide Iacopini was seriously hurt in one of the assaults and remains hospitalized in reserved prognosis while other victims suffered injuries from blows or falls.
  • The file was transferred to the Procura per i Minori on Oct. 15 and the youths are currently denounced for attempted murder and injuries but remain in the juvenile process while prosecutors weigh precautionary measures.
  • The case has raised questions about parental oversight, school responsibility and how juvenile courts balance education-focused measures versus detention options such as community placement or placement in a juvenile penitentiary.
