Two Minor Earthquakes Rattle Finistère in 24 Hours

Experts say the back-to-back tremors along Brittany’s southern Armorican fault reflect regular low-magnitude seismicity in the region.

Overview

  • On July 29, a magnitude 3.3 quake struck 15 km beneath Gouesnach in Finistère and was felt by over 161,000 residents across 37 communes.
  • Less than 24 hours later on July 30, a second tremor of magnitude 2.2 occurred near Clohars-Carnoët close to the Finistère-Morbihan border.
  • Both events were recorded within 10 km of the southern branch of the Armorican fault, part of the ancient Massif armoricain that underpins regional seismic activity.
  • Residents reported loud booms or rumbling noises likened to storms or sonic booms despite no material damage or injuries.
  • France Séisme and the Bureau central sismologique français (BCSF-Rénass) confirmed the quakes and note that the last notable regional event was a magnitude 5.4 tremor in 2002.
