Two Mexican Nationals Charged After Alleged Choking of Border Patrol Agent and Brief Escape in Texas

Prosecutors tied the case to a DOJ initiative targeting violent immigration offenders.

Overview

  • Juan Carmen Padron Mendez, 29, and Juan Carlos Padron Barron, 23, were detained in an ICE-led operation near Spring on Sept. 22 and allegedly attacked the transporting agent at a red light.
  • The complaint says Mendez wrapped his arm around the agent’s neck as Barron exited, grabbed belongings, and both fled before being recaptured that evening near I-45 and North Loop 336 in Conroe.
  • Both remain in federal custody and appeared Sept. 24 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard W. Bennett on counts of assaulting, resisting or impeding a federal officer, and escape.
  • Prosecutors say the case falls under Operation Take Back America, and the FBI is coordinating with HSI, U.S. Marshals, CBP/Border Patrol and local police on the investigation.
  • ICE reports Barron has multiple prior illegal entries and expulsions, while Mendez had no prior encounters; the agent reported fearing for her life and has been treated and released.
