Two Men Publicly Flogged in Indonesia for Same-Sex Relationship

The punishment, carried out under Aceh's Sharia law, has drawn global condemnation from human rights groups.

  • Two university students, aged 18 and 24, were caned 77 and 82 times respectively in Aceh, Indonesia, for engaging in consensual same-sex relations.
  • The men were arrested in November 2024 after locals forcibly entered their rented room and turned them over to Sharia police.
  • Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that criminalizes homosexuality under Sharia law, which has been in place since 2006 as part of a special autonomy agreement.
  • Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the flogging as discriminatory, inhumane, and a violation of international human rights standards.
  • Aceh's Sharia law also mandates corporal punishment for other offenses, such as gambling, adultery, and alcohol consumption, with at least 15 people flogged this year alone.
