Two Men Arraigned in Alleged Attack on Boston Police Outside Kevin Gates Concert

Prosecutors say one suspect reached for an officer’s gun as security tried to remove him from the venue.

Overview

  • The confrontation began around 9:50 p.m. Wednesday when detail officers assisted security with removing Edwin Rivera from MGM Music Hall during Kevin Gates’s Fenway show.
  • Prosecutors and police say Rivera threw a drink, threw a punch, grabbed an officer’s jacket, and then reached for the officer’s firearm as the struggle spilled outside.
  • Police say Steven Costa, identified as Rivera’s cousin, intervened, ignored commands, attempted to strike an officer, and was subdued with a Taser.
  • One officer was transported to a hospital for treatment, while Boston EMS evaluated both suspects who did not require hospitalization.
  • Rivera and Costa were arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court, released on personal recognizance, ordered to return Nov. 10, and Costa was transported on an outstanding warrant to Falmouth District Court; Rivera’s lawyer disputes the allegations as the case remains under investigation.
