Overview
- Officers were called around 1:14 p.m. Sunday to a Cranberry Hill Circle residence in Mauldin after a report that a 3-year-old girl had no pulse.
- First responders restored a pulse for the 3-year-old, and the 3-year-old and a 1-year-old were transported to a hospital in critical condition.
- Police said both children were emaciated from malnutrition, severely underweight, and showed visible wounds tied to lack of hygiene, with the home containing uncleaned human excrement.
- Ryan Addison Vassallo, 22, and Demarion Jaquez Estez Sloan, 23, were charged with two counts each of unlawful conduct toward a child and are held at the Greenville County Detention Center on $200,000 bonds.
- The two victims, along with another child reported to live with Vassallo, were placed in Department of Social Service care, and police said the children’s prospects for recovery remain uncertain as the investigation continues.
