Two Major Hamburg Bridges Closed, Causing Widespread Delays

Long detours are extending journeys on key northern routes.

Overview

  • The Süderelbbrücke on the A1 and the Köhlbrandbrücke in the port were closed from Friday evening, producing heavy weekend traffic on diversion routes.
  • Officials closed the Süderelbbrücke for preparatory work ahead of a replacement and closed the Köhlbrandbrücke for scheduled maintenance.
  • Traffic-monitoring data showed peak backups of about seven kilometres on the A1 and about eight kilometres on the A7, with some drivers facing more than an hour of extra travel time.
  • Police and the traffic-control centre manually adjusted traffic signals to push more vehicles onto detours and recommended long-distance reroutes via the A20, B206 and A7 while local drivers can use the B75.
  • Authorities say both closures are planned to end by Monday at 05:00, and drivers should expect ongoing congestion on key north–south corridors and plan extra travel time.
