Two Magnitude 4.1 Quakes Hit Oaxaca and Guerrero With No Seismic Alert

SASMEX thresholds were not reached by the overnight events.

Overview

  • The National Seismological Service reported a 4.1 quake at 01:13 local time west of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca at a depth of 6.5 km.
  • A second 4.1 event was logged at 03:56 northeast of Tecpan, Guerrero at a depth of 44.3 km.
  • The events did not meet SASMEX activation criteria, which depend on both magnitude and epicenter distance, such as requirements near or above magnitude 5 for closer sources and higher thresholds for distant ones.
  • SSN continues real-time monitoring through its nationwide network that determines time, location, magnitude and depth for seismic events.
  • Earlier activity on December 9 included a magnitude 4.3 near Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas at 80.1 km depth and a magnitude 4.0 southeast of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco at 17.6 km.
