Two L.A. County Men Charged in Ventura County Mail Thefts as Victim Count Rises to 35

Prosecutors have filed charges following the identification of 35 victims.

Overview

  • Julian Mancilla Sotelo, 20, and Angel Garcia, 27, were arrested Sept. 18 after deputies stopped a car near a Camarillo post office where stolen mail was being discarded.
  • Authorities recovered numerous pieces of mail in and around the vehicle and booked both men into Ventura County Main Jail.
  • Investigators linked recovered items to drop boxes at U.S. Postal Service offices in Camarillo, Oxnard, and Port Hueneme, as well as a private mailbox in Carpinteria.
  • Filed counts include mail theft, identity theft, conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and fraud involving 10 or more identities.
  • The Sheriff’s Office credited public tips, reported that most identified victims have had mail returned, and asked others to call investigators at (805) 654-9511.
