Two Killed, Three Injured in Pitampura Scrap-Plot Fire in Delhi

Investigators are probing how flammable cardboard stored in tin sheds fueled the blaze after firefighters brought it under control.

Overview

  • A PCR call reported the fire around 1:25 a.m., with six fire tenders initially deployed and later increased to nine as crews contained the blaze by about 2:30 a.m. and fully extinguished it by 3:25 a.m.
  • Five people with severe burns were rescued and taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where two—identified as Biresh and Satish—were declared dead and three remain under treatment.
  • Police said all five were residents of Nalanda district in Bihar who lived in tin sheds on the plot and earned their livelihood collecting and selling scrap cardboard and cartons.
  • Officials said the rapid spread was driven by highly combustible scrap material, and crime and forensic teams collected samples as the exact cause remains under investigation and legal action is being pursued.
  • Damage assessments are ongoing, with reports differing on whether two or three of the four tin sheds were completely gutted, and police noted vehicles and waste cardboard were also destroyed.
