Two Killed in Separate Avalanches in Savoie's La Plagne and Valloire

Judicial inquiries are underway into the fatal slides.

Overview

  • At La Plagne, a hors-piste avalanche on the north face of Bellecôte swept six skiers, killing a guide in his 60s and critically injuring a woman in her 50s.
  • Rescuers reported the alert at 11:47 and freed two gravely injured victims by 12:10 before airlifting them to the Grenoble University Hospital.
  • In Valloire, a slide in the Combe Aiguille Noire under Mont Jovet around 16:00 killed a 59-year-old ski tourer and lightly injured others.
  • More than a dozen specialists, including PGHM teams, two doctors, a dog handler and pisteurs, conducted helicopter evacuations.
  • Authorities cited recent winds and variable avalanche bulletins—level 2 in many sectors and level 4 in Haute-Maurienne—and urged careful route choices and proper rescue equipment.
