Two Killed in Crash of South Korean Navy P-3C Patrol Plane in Pohang

Overview

  • The P-3C maritime patrol plane took off from the Pohang air base at 1:43 p.m. and crashed into a nearby mountain about seven minutes later during a training flight.
  • Fire authorities deployed 40 firefighters, 17 pieces of equipment and two helicopters to battle fires and conduct search-and-rescue operations at the crash site.
  • Three bodies were recovered and the Navy has confirmed two fatalities among the four crew members on board.
  • Acting President Lee Ju-ho called for full rescue efforts following his briefing by Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho on the incident.
  • The Navy has launched an investigative unit to probe the cause of the crash, marking the first known accident involving its fleet of 16 P-3C anti-submarine aircraft.
