Two Killed After Floodwaters Sweep Car Off Corsica’s RT10

Extreme Mediterranean rainfall created rapid flash floods that cut the island's main south-coast road.

Overview

  • The vehicle was swept from the RT10 around 1 a.m. early Friday, three people were aboard, two were found dead and a third was rescued and flown to the Porto-Vecchio clinic in non-life-threatening condition.
  • More than 100 firefighters, including dive teams, and several helicopters were deployed as the prefecture activated a departmental operations centre to search, secure sites and assess damage.
  • The RT10 between Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio remains closed after the flood carried away pavement and damaged smaller roads and bridges, forcing dozens of evacuations and the overnight sheltering of over 150 residents.
  • Local officials say pipelines and water-treatment infrastructure have been hit and Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio could face short-term problems with potable water as engineers carry out inspections.
  • Météo France placed Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud on orange rain-flood warnings after stations recorded commonly 150–250 mm of rain and up to 300–350 mm on higher ground, a pattern that drives rapid flash floods in Corsica’s steep coastal basins and will likely prolong transport and service disruptions.
