Two Japanese Teens Arrested in Record THC-Liquid Seizure at Fukuoka Airport

Police are probing whether the pair served as couriers for an organized network.

Overview

  • Fukuoka Prefectural Police announced the arrests of a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old from Kishiwada, Osaka, on suspicion of importing narcotics for profit after a trip to Thailand.
  • About 14 kilograms of liquid containing THC were found packed in small bags and concealed in 32 retort-curry boxes inside two suitcases.
  • Moji Customs discovered the concealment during inspection at Fukuoka Airport and said it was the largest seizure of THC-containing liquid there to date.
  • Police said this is the first recorded case since 2000 of Japanese teenagers using commercial aircraft for profit-motivated drug smuggling.
  • The teens traveled to Thailand on August 28 and attempted to return on separate flights on August 30; Moji Customs filed a complaint to prosecutors under the Customs Law, and the suspects have reportedly admitted the charges after initially denying knowledge.
