Two Japan Road Crashes Leave Two Dead, Teen Seriously Hurt as Police Probe Wrong-Way Driving

Police are examining whether the fatal Hagi collision involved wrong-way travel on a divided straightaway.

Overview

  • In Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, two kei passenger cars collided head-on on National Route 262 around 1:40 p.m. Saturday, killing a 74-year-old driver surnamed Tanabe and his 69-year-old wife.
  • The other driver in Hagi, a 37-year-old monk from the city, sustained a minor injury to his right leg.
  • Hagi police say they are investigating the possibility that Tanabe’s vehicle was traveling the wrong way on a straight road with a central divider.
  • In Okinawa City on Friday at about 5:40 p.m., a right-turning car entering the civic hall parking lot struck a moped traveling along the opposing roadside shoulder on Prefectural Route 85.
