Two Inmates Charged in Prison Killing of Former Lostprophets Frontman Ian Watkins

The case has renewed scrutiny of security at Wakefield, a high-security prison known for housing violent offenders.

Overview

  • Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Oct. 13 on murder charges and were directed to attend Leeds Crown Court on Oct. 14.
  • West Yorkshire Police said HMP Wakefield staff called at 9:39 a.m. on Oct. 11 to report a serious assault, and Watkins was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
  • British media have reported that Watkins' throat was cut with a knife during the attack, a detail not yet confirmed by police.
  • Watkins was serving a sentence imposed in 2013 for child sex offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby, after his arrest led to the band's dissolution.
  • Wakefield, known as 'Monster Mansion,' has reported rising violence, and inmates convicted of sex offenses recently warned they felt poorly protected; Watkins previously survived an attack there in 2023.
