Two Inmates Charged in Ian Watkins’ Killing at HMP Wakefield

Detectives continue the homicide investigation with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for November 12.

Overview

  • West Yorkshire Police have charged Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, with murder and both were remanded following a hearing linked to Leeds Crown Court.
  • Watkins, 48, was fatally assaulted at the high-security HMP Wakefield on Saturday and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
  • Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence imposed in 2013 for multiple child sex offences, and investigators later found about 27 terabytes of child abuse imagery on his devices.
  • He previously received an additional 10-month sentence in 2019 for possessing a mobile phone in prison, and reporting describes a serious assault by other inmates in 2023.
  • The fallout continues to affect those around the former singer, with bandmate Lee Gaze’s wife, Syirin Said, saying their family lost friends and had to rebuild their lives despite having no involvement in Watkins’ crimes.
