Overview
- On August 1, Border Patrol agents in the Houlton Sector detained two Indian nationals after they crossed on foot near Bridgewater, Maine.
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection noted its Maine agents had encountered only 15 Indian nationals in the previous three fiscal years, making the arrests exceptionally rare.
- The migrants face prosecution under 8 U.S. Code § 1325 and have been placed into expedited removal, a fast-track deportation process under U.S. immigration law.
- Houlton Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley warned that despite record-low crossing attempts, any illegal entry will result in apprehension, prosecution and deportation.
- CBP is promoting a voluntary departure program through its CBP Home app that offers eligible participants a $1,000 stipend upon confirming their departure.
