Two Houston Police Shootings in One Day Leave One Man Dead, Another Critically Hurt

Multi-agency reviews are underway, with body-camera video to be released within 30 days.

Overview

  • During a 1:40 a.m. traffic stop on Tidwell near Hirsch, officers learned a driver had a felony warrant, a struggle followed, a Taser was used, and an officer shot the man, who remains in critical condition.
  • Two passengers in the vehicle during the traffic stop were not injured, according to Houston police.
  • Hours later on Wayne Street in the Fifth Ward, officers responding to a suspicious-person-with-a-weapon call encountered a man who, police say, raised a weapon, and they fatally shot the 29-year-old.
  • Police say the Wayne Street suspect had threatened family members with a weapon before officers arrived and had tried to gain entry at the home.
  • Both shootings are being investigated by HPD's Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions along with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, and the family of the man killed told ABC13 he had mental health issues.
