Two Houston Police Shootings in One Day Leave One Dead, One Critically Hurt

HPD says parallel reviews are underway with body-camera video due within 30 days.

Overview

  • Around 1:40 a.m., officers stopped a driver in the 4700 block of Tidwell Road, learned he had a felony warrant, used a Taser during a struggle, and an officer then fired, leaving the driver in critical condition.
  • Two passengers in the Tidwell vehicle were not injured, and police have not released the driver's identity.
  • About 2:30 p.m. on Wayne Street in the Fifth Ward, officers responding to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon say a man raised a weapon and ignored commands, and he was shot and died at the scene.
  • Both incidents are being investigated by HPD's Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office, with identities and additional details withheld pending the probes.
  • HPD confirms these were the department's first officer-involved shootings of 2026; last year saw 28 such incidents with 12 deaths, and the deceased man's family told ABC13 he had been dealing with mental health issues.
