Overview
- An officer shot a driver during a 1:40 a.m. traffic stop in the 4700 block of Tidwell Road after a struggle in which a Taser was deployed; the driver remains in critical condition and two passengers were unharmed.
- In a separate Fifth Ward response on Wayne Street that afternoon, officers say a man raised a weapon after commands to drop it, and he was shot and died at the scene; HPD identified him as a 29-year-old man.
- HPD’s Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs, along with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating both incidents, and body-camera footage is set for release within 30 days under department policy.
- The two shootings are the first officer-involved shootings recorded by HPD in 2026; the department logged 28 such incidents in 2025, including 12 deaths.
- Authorities have not released the names of those shot, and some reported specifics about the Fifth Ward case vary and have not been confirmed by HPD, while the family says the deceased had struggled with mental health.
