Two Hikers Rescued From Ravine Near Aconcagua After Overnight Operation

Specialized mountain units used anchors with pulleys to extract the pair in freezing darkness.

Overview

  • Rescuers from GEAM, Gendarmería Nacional and the Patrulla de Rescate located the hikers in the Pampas de Las Leñas area near the Agua Salada waterfall.
  • The pair were reached and extracted around 4 a.m. local time after teams rigged artificial anchors and a polipasto system with pulleys to access the ravine.
  • Both individuals were assessed in good health at Sección Punta de Vacas, received hot drinks and food, and later continued to Uspallata to spend the night.
  • Authorities said the rescue unfolded over several hours in low temperatures and poor visibility following a call for help late Sunday.
  • The Oficina Fiscal of jurisdiction opened an intervention, and local reports differed on the hikers’ names and ages despite agreement that they are from Santa Fe.
