Overview
- The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has charged officer Wickramage Viraj Amila Shavinda Perera and lookout Soosai Antony Vainer under the Merchant Shipping Act for the July 19, 2024, collision.
- Perera is accused of failing to assess navigation risks, maintain situational awareness and ensure a proper lookout during his watch on the Hafnia Nile.
- Vainer is alleged to have spotted the Hafnia Nile closing in on the stationary Ceres I without reporting it, steered the vessel without orders and neglected proper watchkeeping.
- The collision killed Ceres I crewman Sellakkannu Shanmugasundaram, seriously injured Ge Junfu and led to fires that necessitated the rescue of 36 crew members.
- If convicted, each man faces up to two years’ imprisonment and a S$50,000 fine under the Merchant Shipping Act.
