Two German Teens Rescued After Spending Night by Closed Alpine Hut

Rescuers say the case shows that leaving minors alone near closed mountain huts can lead to life-threatening hypothermia.

Overview

  • The teenagers, aged 13 and 16, were found with severe hypothermia after they reached the Bonnerhütte at about 2,340 meters and discovered the refuge was closed.
  • The family began their hike from Toblach and the parents stopped at about 1,000 meters, allowing the youths to continue alone toward the hut on Sunday, October 18, which left the minors overnight on exposed high-altitude terrain.
  • Around 1:00 a.m. the youths called their parents and mountain rescuers from the Alta Pusteria valley responded, located the pair, and took them by ambulance to the hospital in San Cándido for treatment.
  • Local reporting said the teens wore mountain boots but lacked adequate clothing for an overnight stay at high altitude, and rescuers publicly described the parents' decision as a 'great imprudence.'
  • Officials and local outlets warned the case underscores seasonal risks when mountain huts close, the need to check opening times, and the importance of adult supervision and proper gear on autumn alpine hikes.
