Two German House Fires Leave Buildings Uninhabitable, Firefighters Hurt in Bergheim

Police are investigating both blazes.

Overview

  • In Markgröningen, a single-family home caught fire around 6 a.m. Sunday, with crews dismantling the roof to reach hotspots and a neighboring building also damaged.
  • No injuries were reported in Markgröningen, and preliminary damage estimates range from about €200,000 (dpa/police) to roughly €500,000 (TAG24).
  • TAG24 reported the Markgröningen house is currently uninhabitable and that residents have been accommodated elsewhere.
  • In Bergheim on Saturday evening, a cellar fire left three firefighters lightly to moderately injured and a resident hospitalized on suspicion of smoke inhalation, and the multi-family building is not habitable for now.
  • Firefighters brought the Bergheim blaze under control in about 90 minutes and Markgröningen’s by roughly 9 a.m., with causes in both cases still undetermined.
