Two Fires in Granada’s Historic Center Extinguished After Threat to Church and Restaurant

Emergency crews contained both fires by evening preventing injuries, limiting heritage damage

Overview

  • A fire ignited around 12:32 PM in a near-ruin occupied house adjacent to the 16th-century Iglesia de Santa Ana and partially damaged its sacristy
  • A separate blaze in a Plaza Bib-Rambla restaurant kitchen was traced to grease buildup in an exhaust hood and led to a precautionary evacuation
  • Bomberos de Granada joined Policía Nacional and Policía Local in cordoning off nearby streets and deploying units to contain both incidents
  • No injuries were reported in either fire and valuable artworks inside the Iglesia de Santa Ana were successfully rescued
  • Both blazes were fully extinguished by the evening of June 2 and local authorities have launched investigations into their causes
