Two Fatal Manhattan Shootings Occur within 90 Minutes

The NYPD is boosting foot patrols as it seizes more than 2,200 guns this year ahead of an expected summer crime increase.

Overview

  • The first shooting struck just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on West 17th Street in Chelsea, where 21-year-old Raqiese Cohen was shot in the neck and later died.
  • At about 10:45 p.m., officers found a man with a head wound near the Port Authority Bus Station on West 42nd Street in Midtown who succumbed to his injuries.
  • No arrests have been made in either incident and detectives are treating both cases as active investigations.
  • So far this year the NYPD has removed over 2,200 firearms from city streets and deployed 1,500 additional officers to foot patrols across the five boroughs.
  • Despite record-low shooting and homicide figures this year, officials warn that crime typically increases as temperatures rise.
