Two Fatal I-80 Crashes Hours Apart in East Bay, DUI Suspected in One

CHP reports suspected impairment in the Richmond wreck, not in the Oakland motorcycle fatality.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a suspected DUI crash that killed a car’s passenger in the East Bay early Sunday.

  • The Richmond crash occurred around 2:10 a.m. near Hilltop Drive and involved a BMW 440i and a Toyota Prius.
  • A rear passenger in the Prius died, the Prius driver suffered major injuries, and the BMW driver had minor injuries before being arrested on suspicion of DUI.
  • CHP said lanes there reopened around 5 a.m., and the Contra Costa County Coroner will release the victim’s identity after notifying relatives.
  • Hours later around 2:30 p.m., a four-vehicle crash on eastbound I-80 in Oakland killed the rider of a Honda VT motorcycle.
  • CHP Oakland reported no suspected alcohol or drug involvement, lanes 1–3 were closed during the response, and all drivers remained at the scene as the cause is investigated.
