Two Families Die in Suspected Debt-Driven Poisonings in Bihar and Gujarat

Forensic teams are examining evidence to establish whether severe debt drove families in Nalanda and Ahmedabad to poison themselves

Overview

  • In Nalanda district, four members of the Dharmendra Kumar family died after consuming a suspected poison, one remains critical at VIMS Hospital, and a younger son who did not ingest the substance survived under police protection.
  • Preliminary investigations indicate the Nalanda household faced continuous business losses and carried roughly Rs 5 lakh in high-interest debt from a moneylender.
  • In Ahmedabad’s Bagodara village, rickshaw driver Vipul Vaghela, his wife Sonal, and their three children were found dead by apparent poisoning in their rented home with no suicide note recovered.
  • Ahmedabad (Rural) SP Om Prakash Jat has led a multi-agency probe involving Bagodara police, the Local Crime Branch, Special Operations Group and Forensic Science Laboratory, and post-mortem examinations are underway.
  • Authorities are probing possible coercion, financial duress and family dynamics as contributing factors in a series of similar tragedies across India since late 2024.
