Two Eastern Pacific Lows Likely to Become Tropical Depressions

The National Hurricane Center warns the systems will threaten Mexican offshore waters with strong winds and high seas.

Overview

  • Invest EP99, a broad low about 700 nautical miles south‑southwest of southwestern Mexico, has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression late this weekend or early next week and is expected to move northward off the coast.
  • EP99 is forecast to produce fresh to near‑gale winds and moderate to rough seas for Michoacán and Jalisco offshore from tonight through Wednesday night regardless of whether it becomes a depression.
  • Invest EP98, centered near 12°N 119°W with a measured pressure around 1009 mb, also has a high 48‑hour formation probability and is expected to develop as it moves west to west‑northwest this weekend.
  • The remnant low of Tropical Depression Fifteen‑E east‑southeast of Hawaii carries a medium (about 50%) seven‑day chance of redevelopment and is already producing fresh NE–E winds and 6–9 ft seas west of 121°W.
  • Across the Atlantic, tropical waves near 43.5°W and 82°W and a monsoon trough feature observed by ASCAT are generating scattered convection and a pressure gradient that is producing fresh to strong trade winds and 6–9 ft seas in parts of the central Caribbean.
