Two Early-Morning Quakes in Mexico Trigger No Seismic Alert

SASMEX kept the alert inactive due to distance–magnitude thresholds not being met.

Overview

  • Mexico’s National Seismological Service recorded a magnitude 4.0 event at 02:21 a.m. west of San Marcos, Guerrero, at a depth of 14.7 km.
  • A second quake of magnitude 4.1 was logged at 03:05 a.m. southeast of Crucecita, Oaxaca, at a depth of 16.1 km.
  • SSN reported epicentral coordinates of 16.813°, -99.553° for the San Marcos event and 15.299°, -95.619° for the Crucecita event.
  • Under SASMEX criteria, alerts issue only when specific distance–magnitude thresholds are reached, such as magnitude 6.0 beyond 350 km, 5.0 between 350–250 km, or above 5.0 within 250 km.
  • Protección Civil reiterated guidance to stay calm, move to safety zones, avoid windows and elevators, and follow instructions from emergency brigades.
