Two Dutch Riders Disqualified from Tour de Guadeloupe for Vehicle-Assisted Shortcut

Spectator-captured videos prompted commissaires to eject the riders, impose penalties, open investigations into other vehicle-assisted breaches.

Overview

  • On Sunday during stage 2 of the Tour de Guadeloupe, RC Jan van Arckel riders Niels Tenniglo and Huub Van Kapel hid behind a roadside car to rejoin the peloton.
  • Race commissaires, aided by spectator videos, spotted the shortcut and disqualified the two cyclists mid-stage.
  • Each rider was fined 100 CHF and had 20 points deducted from his UCI ranking under international cycling regulations.
  • Organisers have reviewed additional videos showing other cyclists hitching rides on vehicles and announced plans for further sanctions.
  • The second stage was marred by numerous crashes, punctures and abandonments that may have created opportunistic conditions for cheating.
