Two Drill Sergeants Found Dead at Fort Jackson Within 10 Days

Investigations Underway as Cause of Deaths Remain Unknown, Marking Third Death at the Base This Year

Two drill sergeants, Staff Sgt. Zachary Melton and Staff Sgt. Allen Burtram, were found dead at Fort Jackson Army Base in South Carolina within a span of 10 days.
The cause of both deaths is still unknown and under investigation by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.
There is currently no evidence of foul play in either death.
Both sergeants were found unresponsive after failing to report for work, Melton in his car and Burtram at the base.
These incidents mark the third death at the base this year, following the death of Sgt. Jaime Contreras in June during a training exercise.
