Overview

  • On July 24 federal prosecutors filed ammunition possession and accessory after-the-fact charges against 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and 22-year-old Christhian Aybar-Berroa.
  • Both men, who entered the U.S. unlawfully and are subject to removal orders, were arrested and remain in federal custody ahead of their initial court appearances.
  • Surveillance video released by Homeland Security shows the suspects ambushing the officer at Fort Washington Park, firing at him and fleeing on a moped.
  • The off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was struck in the face and arm but returned fire, wounding Mora Nunez before medics took him to a hospital.
  • The Justice Department’s lawsuit against New York City officials contends sanctuary policies hinder cooperation with federal immigration enforcement in cases like this shooting.
